Victoria and the rogueAuthor: Meg Cabot
Publication Details: London, Macmillan Children's 2003 Rating: 3 out of 5 While sailing from India, financially independent 16 year old, Lady Victoria Arbuthnot, finds her heart swept up by the moonlight and accepts a marriage proposal from none other than Hugo Rothschild, ninth earl of Malfrey! |
From the author of The Princess Diaries series, Meg Cabot writes Victoria and the Rogue in mock Regency style with a modern twist. Using a touch of Austin's formula, Cabot brings a tongue in cheek romance accessible to the early adolescent to young adult reader. Those who have read Austin classics will recognise a little Emma in Victoria's well meaning interference to improve others' lives.
Although Cabot is essentially making fun of the romance genre and the foolishness of waiting for moonlight to accept a marriage proposal, she still fills the required formula of a romance, giving a happy ending with a shocking amount of lip kissing for a true Regency reader. This novel is of course aimed squarely at girls reader and contains some accurate historical detail and vocabulary. This book is also available on audio book and e-book versions.
