Percy jackson and the last olympian
This book begins with Percy on a leisurely drive with his friend Rachel Dare along the coast, when pegasus Blackjack lands on the car bonnet to announce to Percy that New York (Olympus) was under attack and his help was needed right away. Needless the say the car bonnet got pulverised!
While Rachel is one of the few humans who can see beyond the mist the gods cast over humanity, most cannot and attribute activities by the gods and their adversaries as freak, yet natural storms and weather conditions. Jumping on the back of Blackjack, Percy meets his demi-god friend Beckendorf and they begin their attack on Kronos, the re-incarnated Titan bent on the total destruction of the gods and Olympus.
It doesn't take long for Kronos to re-group and mount his second attack, but the gods are still distracted by trying to stop Typhon, an enormous monster set free from Tartarus wrecking havoc across America. Only Percy and the young demi-gods seem to be aware of Kronos scheme to destroy Olympus and the gods and so it seems they must defend Olympus and destroy Kronos on their own. Will their demi-god powers be enough to save the world?
A real page turner and a great conclusion to the Percy Jackson series.

Cool book trailer.... you can make your own and upload too!

Finnikin of the rock
Source: Penguin Books 2008
|
Author: Melina Marchetta
Publication Details: Penguin Group Australia; Victoria 2008 Rating: 3.5 outta 5 If you were expecting another relatable female teen character driven story with identity issues such Looking For Alibrandi, Saving Francesca or even Jellicoe Road in a certain extent, prepared to be disappointed. |
While Marchetta is an excellent writer and Finnikin of the Rock has a well developed storyline, the novel takes a strong, persistent reader to get beyond the first few chapters before the narrative really takes hold. Every place and name is fictitious and as such takes some time for the reader to develop familiarity with the characters and countries as well as understanding a complex storyline with worshippers of the goddesses Sagrami and Lagrami along with the words of the curse that must be broken in order for the kingdom to be restored.
At 399 pages and in three parts, is it a complex yet interesting storyline, but will not have the wide appeal of Marchetta's earlier writing. The novel explores themes of survival and collective identity, but also has references to violence, rape and barbaric treatment of human beings. Parallels can be made to the Holocaust and well as our treatment of refugees in society at large.
Finnikin of the Rock begins with Finnikin, son of the King's guard and Sir Topher, the King's first man, travelling to Sendecane to collect a novice, Evanjalin, from the cloister of Lagrami who has had night walks of the restoration of the kingdom of Lumatere. The rest of the story involves Finnikin, along with Evanjalin and Sir Topher working to free Finnikin's father from the mines of Sorel, bringing the troupe of the king's guard back together again to ultimately lead the exiles of Lumatere back to their kingdom. Evanjalin and Finnikin are pivotal to the resolution of this tale.

If you haven't already come across The 39 Clues series, you are going to love them. With 21 books in the series, this review is on book one of the Cahills vs Vespers which is in the middle of the series.
Another action packed adventure, Amy and Dan Cahill evade an abduction, but soon they realise they have been thrown back into a world of intrigue and double crossing to save the rest of their family who were successfully abducted by Vesper One. Vesper One sends Amy and Dan to accomplish a seemly impossible clue hunt and so the adventures begin.
Their hunt takes them all over Europe, till eventually they piece together what Vesper One is looking for and manage to get a step ahead, but the book ends with Vesper One getting his hands on what he wants and we have to read the next book to find out who this Vesper One is and if he's going to let even one of the seven Cahill hostages go. I would definitely recommend getting out at least two books at a time from the library and having the next two on reserve, or better still access the library's e collection to get your next fix of The 39 Clues.
What's super cool about this series is that it has real references to famous painters, Caravaggio and Da Vinci, the Ancient Roman Colosseum, Ufizzi Gallery in Florence so you're getting a sweet history lesson at the same time. Another bonus of this story are the six playing cards to examine in a pocket at the front of the book titled Evidence Pack: Find the Vesper Enforcer! and a website to join in order to complete your on line mission (but the cards can be a little tricky to fit back into the pocket).
